Gus Wittschack, Commander 2016-2020

The Mid-cities Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #1513, has elected Gus Wittschack, a combat-wounded Vietnam Army veteran, as the Dallas - Fort Worth Mid-Cities Chapter Commander  - 2016-2020.

 

Gus Wittschack hails from Cheektowaga, New York, and was born to parents of German decent.

Army Specialist Wittschack was wounded during his service in Vietnam.  For his valor, Gus received the Bronze Star w/ V Device, and a Purple Heart for his actions on October 1967 at Lai Khe, Vietnam.  His unit C Company, 2nd Battalion of the 18th Infantry, came under attack, and during the battle, he was wounded in the leg, Despite his leg injury, and with no regard for his own wounds, Gus sought to assist another wounded solider.  Gus served in the Army for 10 years, at the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). 

 

After leaving military service, Gus worked as Director of Parts and Service Operations at a Chevrolet dealership in Buffalo, NY. He spent most of his life in the Buffalo New York area, before moving to Cross Roads Texas.  Last year Gus was recognized by U.S. Congressman Michael C. Burgess : 26th District Of Texas and was the recipient of the 2018 Congressional Veteran Commendation to recognize Gus for his military service and continued community service to veterans.

Gus married the love of his life Rose, before going to Vietnam, and have been married over 50 years.  The couple has two grown children Paul and Susie.  His children and wife are Associate Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.  


Gus serves as the Commander of Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter for Dallas Fort Worth metro-plex.  The chapter has over 420 Purple Heart Members.   He also serves as the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Texas Junior Vice Commander. He previously served as the Military Order of the Purple Heart  Department of Texas Sgt at Arms for many years.
